Art and Artist Information
Michael A. Hogan
Michael studied photography at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He was influenced by the
work of Ansel Adams, Elliot Porter and his teacher Jack Camell. In 1985 Michael began making photographs
of the Southern New Jersey Pinelands with a view camera, a place where he fished, camped, and canoed
many times. The more he photographed the area, the more he became interested in its history and unique
ecology. He also began to explore and the photograph the remote sites in the Pine Barrens.
Michael became aware that the public should be educated of the need to protect and preserve this fragile and unique environmental treasure and that his photography could help accomplish this. He became involved in area groups that promote the preservation and education of these areas including the Whitesbog Preservation Trust, the Batsto Citizens Committee, the NJ Nature Conservancy, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, the Old Pine Farm Land Trust, and the Federation of Gloucester County Watersheds.
Michael's fine art photography of the Pinelands, the Delaware River and the New Jersey Shore is in many
corporate, public and private collections and has been used by various organizations for brochures, posters,
annual reports, Calendars, murals, displays and for fundraising. Michael's work was exhibited in the Cannon
Building Rotunda, Washington DC in 1991 and he was featured in a 1993 episode of New Jersey Network's "Discover
New Jersey" program. Visit Michael's web site at www.hoganphoto.com

Over the course of my career in nature photography I have become deeply involved in environmental preservation and education. I was active in the effort to pass the open space trust fund in Camden County, and in preserving Old Pine Farm and Timber Creek Park in Deptford Township. I have also worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to educate the public about swamp pink and to preserve the populations in southern New Jersey.
I am a past member the Advisory Board of the Nature Conservancy, Delaware Bay Shore Office and work with many of the conservation and watershed organizations. I am a volunteer land steward for the New Jersey Conservation Foundation and worked with them on many environmental issues and projects. I have collaborated with the late author Robert Peterson on a book, “The Natural Wonders of Jersey Pine and Shore” that was published in by Plexus Publishers in March 2005.

I have worked with environmental commissions and watershed groups in promoting environmental protection and education throughout southern New Jersey. This includes environmental slide presentations to area schools, civic associations, and local governments. I have produced environmental presentations on CD rom for distribution to schools and libraries. I published and continue to maintain websites for the Old Pine Farm Land Trust and Weymouth Township. I have also written many grants with environmental commissions and organizations for environmental projects. I have completed a Natural Resource Inventory of Ceres Park for Mantua Township in 2005 and Greenwich Park in 2006. I have worked with the Deptford Township Environmental Commission and NJ DEP to repair erosion cause by a failed retention at Almonesson Creek Park. I worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and environmental groups promoting a fish ladder at Batsto Village that was completed in fall 2005.
The Weymouth Township Committee asked me to assist in the purchase of an 1800 acre property to be preserve open space. To this means I am working with the New Jersey Green Acres Program, the Atlantic County Department of Regional Planning and Development, and the NJ Conservation Foundation. I have worked with the Weymouth Township Environmental Commission to lead the education process that was successful in passing an open space tax referendum on the 2002 ballot, which was approved by and 2 to1 majority. I recently completed the Recreational and Open Space Element for Weymouth Township’s master plan and facilitated the open public meetings for the plan.
In 2008 I prepared a Hewlett Packard technology grant for the Weymouth Township Elementary School. The school received the $38,000 grant to study and document the flora, fauna and ecological features of nearby New Jersey Conservation Foundation, Dorothy Preserve. Weymouth Elementary School was one of only 2 schools state wide to receive this national grant. In 2009 Weymouth School was chosen by Hewlett Packard to do a presentation about the project in Washington D.C., at a national grants conference, one of only 10 schools chosen out of the 140 that received the grant.
